June 2009

April-May 2009:

It's been a busy first month for Coco's Cat Rescue! A lot of work has been done by a lot of volunteers and much progress has been made on establishing this non-profit organization dedicated to trapping, spaying and neutering feral cats, providing low cost spay/neuters for local residents' cats and kittens, and to caring for, fostering and adopting out kittens aged three months and younger.

Coco's Cat Rescue is now official! A website has been purchased and is up and running:

www.cocoscatrescue.org

Coco's Cat Rescue has received permission from the municipality and the letter needed to present to Hacienda to apply to be able to receive tax deductible donations.  This process is underway and is expected to take several months. Additionally, Cocos will now be working in conjunction with Dra. Sandra Valdez, who heads up the perrera in Playa del Carmen, and will be able to have two cats spayed daily there, with materials provided by CCR. This brings to a total number of seven veterinarians who will be working with Cocos' and donating their time, services and resources in providing spay/neuter surgeries. It is wonderful to have the support and cooperation of the municipality and their involvement in our mission!

In addition to holding its own spay/neuter clinics and working with local veterinarians to provide low cost services, Coco's Cat Rescue will also be participating in spay/neuter clinics being held by VIDA and SPAY.  These clinics will take place in Playa del Carmen, Akumal and Chemuyil.  Coco's hopes to be able to observe the latest surgery techniques being used, and to see how the clinics are run and organized so that it will be able to hold their own in the future as well.  For more information on the VIDAS clinics, including dates and locations, visit their website: www.VIDAS.org.  Information on the SPAY clinics is available on their website, www.SPAYucatan.org, or by contacting Jennifer Smith at Turtle Bay Café in Akumal - 984-875-9138.  Coco's has a wish list of supplies needed for spay/neuter and basic medical care for its cats - please visit the website for a complete list and details.  We are especially in need of sutures, which can be bought in Playa del Carmen for about 45 pesos.  We are able to use and accept expired sutures as well if there are veterinarians that would like to donate these that they won't be able to use.  Most needed are the 2-0 and 3-0 sizes.

Most reports define success by numbers, and we're no different.  But our numbers are more about how many cats we've helped, not the bottom line!

Here are our numbers since our inception in mid-March:

Spay/Neuter Surgeries

30 cats - that's almost a cat a day!

26 kittens and two cats have found new, loving, forever homes!

How you can help:

  • Volunteers are always needed! Fostering, helping trap feral cats, taking cats to the vets for spay/neuter surgeries - these are just a few of the hands-on ways to help out.
  • Donations - always welcome, always needed! See the website for details and tax information.
  • Wish List supplies - we are always in need of medical supplies, as well as other supplies, such as kitten formula, blankets, towels, etc.  Visit our website for a complete list of items.
  • Become an Adopter! The BEST and most rewarding part of helping us out - adopt a kitten and get a best friend for life!

Thank you for your interest and support! We look forward to checking in again with you next month to let you know What's New at Coco's Cat Rescue!
